STILL
waiting for my new grandson. I jump every time one
of the
phones ring - this is my home phone, the business
one and
both of my cell phones, lol. I have never gotten
more
solicitation calls, wrong numbers or hang ups OR at
least I
do not usually notice them as badly.
Hopefully
it is FINALLY really spring here in mid-MO.
Besides
the horrendous $500 to $650 electric bills due
to our
source of heat being an electric furnace, I am
going
to have my now 3 year old grand Princess Madison
here
for about a week once she becomes a BIG SISTER!
I
talked to Mommy and Madi last night, Madison told
me she
sure is looking forward to staying with Grandma-
as soon
as the baby in Mommy's belly comes out she is
going
to play with him ( ?! ) and then come home with
Grandma,
lol. At three, I imagine she really thinks she
is
going to play with this brand new baby and then give
him
back to Mommy and Daddy and come home with me.

Why
Should I Make a Budget?
You say
you know where your money goes and don’t need it all
written
down to keep up with it? I can issue you this challenge:
Keep
track of every penny you spend for one month,
and I
do mean EVERY penny.
You
will be shocked at what the itty-bitty expenses add up to.
Take
the total that you spent on just one unnecessary item
for the
month, multiply it by 12 for the months in a year
and
multiply the result by 5 to represent 5 years.
That is
how much you could have saved AND drawn interest on
in just
five years. That, my friend, is the very reason all
of us
need a budget.
If we
can get control of the small expenses that really don’t
matter
to the overall scheme of our lives, we can enjoy
financial
success.
The
little things really do count. Cutting what you spend
on
lunch from five dollars a day to three dollars a day on
every
work day in a five day work week saves $10 a week, or
$40 a
month, which is $480 a year and is $2400 in five years
. . .
plus interest.
It
really IS the little things. You still eat lunch everyday
AND
that was only one place to save money in your daily living
without
doing without one thing you really need. There are
a lot
of places to cut expenses if you look for them.
Set
some specific long term and short term goals.
There
are no wrong answers here. If it’s important to you,
then
it’s important, period.
If you
want to be able to make a down payment on a house,
start a
college fund for your kids, buy a sports car, take
a
vacation to Aruba, etc. - then that is your goal and your
reason
to get a handle on your financial situation now.
Other
tips to help with your budget:
Buy
family size packages of groceries and cook ahead meals
that
you can and freeze some for later quick & easy meals.
Save
all of the chores you have to drive to do for one or
two
outings and map out your trips to maximize your gas
savings.
This can really add up more quickly than we think.
Use
coupons when possible and if something is on sale that
you
need often, buy as much of it as you can afford to
instead
of several times over the week, month, etc.
You can
eliminate most, if not all, long distance telephone
charges
by getting Skype or other computer phone services
AND
also make more local long distance calls on your cell
phone,
which is usually cheaper than the LD services on
your
land line.
One of
my best tricks to keep my 3 kids dressing *with the
times*
but on a very limited budget was to hit Wal-Mart
and
other discount shopping centers when they were getting
ready
to put the next season's clothing out - I just bought
a size
or two ahead while they were still growing - so they
always
had brand new school, winter and summer clothes but
I did
not ( and frankly COULD NOT ) pay regular price.
We save
from 50 to 75% waiting for clearance sales and
the
items were just as good as if I had paid full price.
Mail
packages by parcel post or if you are sending books,
movies
or other media, have your post office check the
rates
to see whether first class, parcel post or media
mail is
the best one to use. It depends on the weight
of the
package and its destination, but I have learned
with
selling movies, books, cd's, etc. on eBay that
there
can be as much as HALF of the cost if you just
ask
them for the cheapest rate for that item.
Save
electricity by not only turning off and UNPLUGGING
anything
you are not actively using but by doing as much
as
possible when using your appliances. I bake and broil
more
than one or two things every time I turn my oven
on. I
might use my big electric skillet and fry both
chicken
AND pork chops to have the meat for two or
more
meals ready when I want to use it.
Set
your dishwasher to air dry, the heated dry cycle
supposedly
( from electric company guidelines ) takes
twice
as much power to DRY dishes as it does to wash
them. If
you need them to dry more quickly than the
air dry
cycle, there is a handy and CHEAP invention
called
the dish towel, lol.
Use
plastic grocery bags for liners in small trash
cans.
It really irks me to BUY trash bags, knowing
they
are MEANT to be thrown away so really love the
idea of
using the grocery bags AS trash bags, since
either
way they would be thrown away if not used
for
something else.
Save
the boiling water after you cook pasta, either
strain
it into a bowl and then put the water back
in the
pan or put it in another pan and boil eggs
with
the water, with electric stoves, at least,
the
burner stays hot for a good ten minutes and
is just
wasting while it cools.
Another
budget saving tip AND a real time and mess
saver:
use one tablespoon of MAYONAISSE in place
of 2
eggs and cooking oil when baking cakes.
No, you
will not taste the mayo, BUT it is made
out of
. . . eggs and oil! Your cakes will be
moist
and delicious and no muss and fuss!
Lastly,
day old bread is usually about half price
of
those not MARKED day old BUT if you buy fresh
bread
today and take it home, TOMORROW it is
already
DAY OLD BREAD, lol. When there are good
sales
ON bread, I buy as many as the limit is
and
freeze some to use for toast. I do admit,
I am
pretty spoiled to wanting my sandwich or
"along
with the meal" bread to be soft and
preferrably
fresh, but for toasting, frozen
or
refrigerated bread is just fine.
