How to improve sales page conversion rates

 

This is one of the most often questions in marketing

history, and if anyone had a definitive answer, many

copywriters would be out of business. The truth is that

we live in an ever changing world, and results for

different types of copy change. The biggest controversy

in sales letter writing concerns the use of hype. Many

people argue that the Western world, being subject to

advertising messages on an almost constant basis has

grown immune to overstatement. To a degree, this is true,

but statistics still show that hype sells far better than

a timid sales letter.

 

Of course, the product needs to be able to keep the

promises made in the sales letter. The world certainly

has grown tired of scams, and a top quality copywriter

won't even take an assignment unless they have seen

or read the product first, to make sure that it meets

their quality standards. To get conversion rates as high

as possible, you do need to use hype to some degree,

but make sure your claims are never bigger than the

proof that you can back them up with.

 

The biggest factor in improving sales page conversion

rates is making sure that there are no obvious leaks or

holes where the reader will be turned off enough to leave.

It doesn't take much for that to happen. The headline is

the first absolutely critical area, and the vast majority

of sales page testing relates to the headline. After this,

the subheadings are critical. In a well crafted letter,

the reader will be able to know what the letter is about

just by reading the sub headlines. Many readers just skim

sales letters instead of reading them. After getting the

sub headings right, the next major area is the end of the

letter. You need a very strong guarantee, an effective

call to action, and at least one good PS. It is at this

stage the interested buyer needs to be pushed into

finally making the purchase.

Resources for writing a great headline

 

 

The headline is the most critical part of a sales letter.

A top class copywriter will produce many different versions

of the same headline, and test them against the control

headline, which will have been developed with experience

and research. The result of these tests are often a

surprise, even to big name copywriters, and can result

in new controls being developed. If you are a marketer

who cannot pay thousands of dollars for a top class

professional sales letter, you are going to have to do

the best you can without these luxuries.

 

The great feature of sales letters for the aspiring

copywriter is that they are visible. Nobody writes sales

letters to hide them. This is your first valuable resource,

the thousands of internet sales letters which you can study

and create a swipe file from. If you go to the affiliate

networks such as Clickbank and PayDotCom, you will be given

a clear indication of which products on the marketplace are

selling well. The sales copy that is working to sell these

products is there for anyone to study.

 

Also, there for anyone to study, are the materials created

by some of the world's best copywriters. A legend such as

Gary Bencivenga has created a full copywriting course on

his own website, so take full advantage of this. The late

Gary Halbert's website also has many of his old letters

and copywriting tips. Many of the top copywriters of today

have blogs, where new posts appear on a regular basis, so

it is always worth checking back. Writing a headline is

sure to be discussed regularly.

 

If you are prepared to spend some serious money, there is

even a software tool which will analyze headlines and give

feedback on them. It is called Glyphius, and works from

your desktop. You can test various headlines, and get

scores on them. Software is no substitute for humans,

and there is no guarantee the Glyphius results will be

mirrored in the real world. The tool can be a time saver,

though, in deciding which headline to run as a control.
